Blake Angliss has closed to just 22 points off the Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 SuperCup ‘G55 Pro’ class championship lead with three races of the season remaining after scoring a sensational triple victory in the penultimate round at Silverstone this past weekend (24/25 September).
Heading into the event with a 60 point deficit to the class leader, Angliss was determined to earn a big points haul to boost his title ambitions. It was a rare four-race weekend for the championship, with the addition of a race that was postponed last time out at Thruxton.
Previous test outings on the Silverstone National layout meant he was able to hit the ground running during free practice on Friday. After mixed weather conditions in the opening session, he excelled in the dry in the second outing to end the day fastest in class.
The Coventry based racer replicated that performance in qualifying on Saturday morning, becoming the first driver in the class to secure three pole positions across the season. With confidence high from that result, he went on to excel in the two races that afternoon.
In both encounters, the second of which was the rescheduled Thruxton race, Angliss produced exemplary drives. Soaking up race-long pressure from James Taylor behind, he didn’t put a foot wrong and pumped in impressively consistent lap times en-route to a pair of well-earned class wins.
Victory in the opening race secured him the class pole position again for Sunday morning and he took full advantage with his most dominant win of the weekend. Immediately clear of his closest class rival, he stormed clear as the race progressed to secure victory by almost seven seconds in the end.
Unfortunately, Angliss’ perfect run came to an end in the final race. After slipping to second on the opening lap, he was hot on the heels of the leader when a gearbox problem developed. Stuck in fifth gear at one point, he was powerless to prevent himself dropping to fourth in class at the finish.
Angliss, who races with the support of Rosland Capital, Transend, Haigh Group, Splodge Hygiene, Lifeline, Empire RV, Icom and Townsends Vehicle Hire and Sales, has title glory in his sights heading into the 2022 season finale on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit on 08/09 October.
Blake Angliss: ’“Heading into the weekend, if you’d have offered me three race wins and taking almost two-thirds off the points deficit, I’d have snapped your hand off. It’s easily been my most consistent and most successful event in Ginetta’s so far and I’m over the moon.
“Century Motorsport gave me a mega car and we were right on the pace from the first lap on Friday. To finish quickest in free practice and qualifying, and then win the first three races is the sort of weekend that dreams are made of.
“It’s frustrating to have the mechanical problem in the final race as we’d have at least come away with another podium finish from that one too. We go into Brands Hatch still right in the fight though and if we can replicate our pace from this weekend, I’m confident we can go there and take the title.”
